You must ensure that you pack your rugs ell so that they will reach your new home while they are in good condition. This is very important especially when you are moving highly expensive rugs.
If you follow the steps highlighted below you will ensure that you have packed your rug well for moving.
You need to clean your rug before you move. In this case, you can vacuum it to remove dust, tinny pieces of food, and other debris that may be dislodged in the fibers. Cleaning your carpet is important for you to avoid attracting pests and viruses into your new home and it is also not good for you to pack something which dirty. In case your rug is extremely dirty, you can consider calling professional carpet cleaners to assist you in cleaning it before you start packing.
The fibers of your rug have a specific direction where you must roll it, to avoid spoiling it. Just look around to determine the direction of your rug pile. To determine this direction you can try rubbing the surface of your rug using your palm. You will realize that in one direction the fibers will offer some resistance and in the other direction, your palm will feel smooth.
Before you start rolling your carpet for moving you must turn it upside down so that the pile faces the floor. In case you decide to roll the carpet facing up, then you can put a lot of pressure on its backing. If your rug is stiff-backed it can overstretch and also crack.
Start rolling your carpet against the direction of the grain. Roll your carpet slowly to create a shape that resembles a tight cylinder. If you fold your carpet well, it can be safer and easier for you to handle it when moving.
Once you have rolled your rug you will be required to secure the end areas to avoid unrolling while you are moving it. If you have a basic rug, then you can use packing tape. However, if you have a finer rug you can use plastic string to secure it since the packing tape can pull on the backing. In case your rug is very large you will also be required to secure it in the middle.
After you have secured the end of your rug you may wish to wrap it to avoid debris and dust as you move. You can either apply a shrink wrap at the ends or you can buy a special rug bag so that you can use it in wrapping your rug. You should avoid wrapping your rug using thick plastic materials as it will limit the rug fibers from breathing. If your rug is not able to breathe it can create a favorable environment where mildew and mold can start to form or grow. This is important especially if you are moving your rug over a long distance or wrapping it for storage.
To avoid creases from forming, you are supposed to lay flat your rolled and wrapped carpet. Therefore, you can place your rug along the side of your moving vehicle and it must be the first item that you will pack. Ensure you avoid stacking other items on top of your carpet if you wish to avoid creases.
You should not unpack your carpet until you unload all your items from the moving vehicle. If you decide to do so, your carpet will get dirty. Make sure you leave a space on the floor where you will ray your carpet. Before you ray it ensure that you clean the floor thoroughly. After that, you can unwrap and then unroll your carpet.
When you are unpacking your rug you may notice that its corners may have curled up. To straighten your rug over the floor surface you can try to fold the curling ends. In case this does not work you can place a heavy flat piece of furniture at the ends. This will finally straighten your rug to its original position.
If you follow the above steps you will surely not have any challenges in packing your rug as you place to move to your new place.
